What I Did When My Bank Account Information Wouldn’t Get Approved on Booking.com

Booking.com, a popular booking platform for minpaku (private lodging) properties, is operated by an overseas company. Because of this, account settings and issue resolution tend to be far more complicated than with domestic services. I myself struggled for quite a while trying to get my bank account information approved for receiving Booking.com payouts. Having bookings finally start coming in, only to be unable to receive the actual payout, is nothing short of stressful.

In this article, I’ll share what I actually did to resolve the issue when my bank account information kept failing approval on Booking.com. Of course, not everyone will find the same solution works for them, but I hope sharing my experience gives you a useful reference point for approaching the problem. Thanks for reading through to the end.

Make Sure the Katakana Spelling of Your Account Name Is Exact

I had registered a corporate bank account, and the account registration screen required entering the account holder’s name in katakana. At first, I entered it using the abbreviated form commonly used on Japanese bank passbooks, like “カ)○○” (an abbreviation for “Inc.”), and I also experimented with different spacing when submitting. However, this turned out to be the reason my approval kept getting rejected over and over.

When I contacted Booking.com support, I learned that their system algorithm strictly checks the katakana spelling, and that even for corporate accounts, it’s preferable to spell out the full formal name in katakana rather than use an abbreviated form like “カ)~”. For example, if the company name is “株式会社○○” (Kabushiki Gaisha ○○), you need to re-enter it precisely as “カブシキガイシャ○○” — exactly matching the katakana spelling registered with your bank.

It may seem like a minor detail, but apparently, when an overseas system processes complex Japanese text, even a single character difference can cause the approval to fail. If you keep running into errors, it might help to double-check the official katakana spelling registered with your bank (as shown on your passbook), then resubmit without any extra spaces or abbreviations.

Increase Your Payout Frequency to Verify Your Account Status More Often

On Booking.com, property owners can choose how often they receive payouts. Basically, there are two options: a lump-sum payment at the beginning of each month, or weekly payments every Thursday.

I had initially set my payout frequency to once a month, which meant that even after noticing an error and taking action to fix it, I had to wait quite a while before finding out whether it had actually worked. That’s when I realized it would be smarter to switch to a weekly payout cycle, so I could quickly verify whether my corrected account information had been properly reflected. The advantage of a weekly cycle is that if the account information fails again, you can fix it right away and try again the following week.

A Last Resort You’d Rather Avoid: Switching Bank Accounts Entirely

If your account information still won’t get approved no matter how many corrections you make, there’s one last-resort option: switching to a different bank account altogether. It’s a step you’d rather avoid, but in my own case, after enduring an extended period of payment issues with no resolution in sight, I simply couldn’t take it anymore. Since I happened to already have an account at a different bank, I switched to registering that one instead — and to my surprise, it was approved right away.

Booking.com’s payment operations are handled from overseas bases, so even when you contact support from within Japan, you generally can’t be connected directly to the department in charge. As a result, resolving issues through back-and-forth communication can take a considerable amount of time. If the alternative is wasting more time and energy going back and forth, then switching to a different bank account to get smooth approval — while not ideal — is a reasonable option worth considering.

Make the Most of Booking.com to Grow Your Minpaku Revenue

For minpaku owners, not being able to receive payouts right when occupancy and bookings are on the rise is a major blow to your business. As covered in this article, there are three things worth trying:

1. Make sure the katakana spelling of your account holder’s name is a perfect match
2. Increase your payout frequency to set up a system for early verification
3. As a last resort, switch to a different bank account entirely

Trying these three approaches may help you overcome account approval issues. Of course, this isn’t a guaranteed fix, but I hope it serves as a helpful reference point.
